Connor's First Day of School

Today was a very big occasion. Connor commenced school. I remember in the early days when Connor was having significant health issues (cause of course we don't have any at all anymore) like going into heart failure not long after his life saving open heart surgery at 5 days of age, someone wrote me an email of support and said it won't be long and he will be starting school before you know it and you will be standing proud. How right that person was.

An email with photos went out to a group of friends/associates today and one of his specialists really nailed it .... "he has defied the odds".

Amazingly Connor wants to go back tomorrow .... a bit surprising since barely a week ago he was apparently four years of age again and going back to kindy.

Dissapointing End to the Special Zipper Challenge

Those that may have followed the auction of the final item (at least a couple from indication of number watching the item during auction), will have noted the Sir Don did not sell and in fact did not receive a bid.

This is the first time I would have to say that Sir Don has let Australia down ... not really his fault but ...

The item in fact had a starting price of half that of others currently being sold at $1500 so it is quite amazing. I actually thought someone would snap it up for a rediculous price in the final seconds of the auction but that did not even occur.

So to wrap up the challenge I will now approach HeartKids of South Australia who are the recipients of the money from this challenge (allocated to them by HeartKids Australia) and discuss whether I present them with the final item to have auctioned at one of their events, or whether I find another means to auction/sell the item. I will keep the site updated on progress to allow the finalisation to be visible, especially to those that have participated in trading who I sincerely thank.

Welcome Visitors from eBay

Welcome anyone who has just come to this site through the auctioning of the final item of this up trade challenge that I undertook.

If you want to know more about how this challenge started, or the actual diary from the time our son was born supposedly healthy to finding out two days later that he had a serious heart condition and we needed to be flown to Melbourne for open heart surgery, over 350 posts have been made to this blogsite. To view previous just head over to archives found in the right hand column ... newest at top ... oldest at bottom. You may find posts about excitement, achievements, disapointments, general banter, rants, complete rubbish and of course interaction with a good efriend Dan English of 0ddness (with a zero) who lost his beautiful daughter Bethy (Bethany) to Congenital Heart Disease several years ago. Dan in fact had significant input into the naming of the challenge when I handed it over to readers for suggestions and a vote.

You might even fund a little humour hidden away inbetween the odd post if you really look hard. Thanks again for visiting and I hope you can play a major role in bidding up the final item that will see FULL PROCEEDS DONATED TO HEARTKIDS AUSTRALIA with funds specifically being provided to support South Australian families travelling to Melbourne with their children requiring heart surgery.

.. and cause I know you are all busy people and like to be spoon fed .. here are some links to perhaps more significant posts ...

What is the special zipper challenge?

Trading Commences

Birth of an Aussie Heartkid Part One (This is the start of the diary)

This is a very special post and on re-reading a few minutes ago would appear there must have been some dust in my eyes. Whilst five years on and many hurdles have been crossed (rather than leapt over), the emotions of what these innocent babies and young children go through with the surgeries occuring everyday is never done and dusted I guess. Yet we are lucky .. despite being in serious and critical conditions on several occasions and being told specifically on one occasion (when Connor went into uncontrolled heart failure at 3 months of age) that he may not make it, Connor is a survivor.

It's over to you folks .. read more if you want, leave if you want .. but I ask that you take one thing with you ....

More than four young Australians will die this week as a result of congenital heart disease

Hang on .. before you leave ... just please take the time to read the rest of the statistics relating to Childhood Heart Disease ... it may be hard, but it is hard for our kids as well.

Common known facts about CHD include;
- Heart defects are present in 1 in 100 babies
- Heart defects are the most common birth abnormality
- Heart disease in children is the leading cause of young children death in Australia, accounting for more than 30% of all childhood deaths.
- Childhood Heart Disease takes more lives than all other childhood diseases combined
- Nearly twice as many children die each year from congenital heart disease compared with all childhood cancers
- More than 2015 babies are born in Australia each year with a heart defect
- Childhood heart disease is no fault of the parents or the child. It is simply a result of the cruel hand of fate
- The severity of defects in heart children can range from a hole in the heart, to a highly complex combination of conditions
- Up to 20% of heart defects are gene-linked abnormalities, but for the remaining 80% the cause is largely unknown
- More than half of these conditions are serious enough to require treatment through medication or surgery – sadly some cannot be repaired
- Cures of these heart conditions remains unidentified, therefore there is an immense need to develop early intervention strategies to identify and prevent heart disease in children
- Heart disease is the most common reason for admission of Australian children to intensive care units with more than 1300 being admitted each year
- The term ‘congenital heart defect’ refers to an abnormality of the heart, which is present at birth. It has nothing to do with diet or obesity
- Heart valve replacements come in 3 forms: homographs (valves from humans) tissue valves (from cows or pigs) and mechanical man-made valves
- Some children acquire heart conditions during childhood, eg cardiomyopathy, Kawasaki disease or as a result of rheumatic fever
- A disproportionate number of indigenous children suffer from acquired heart disease – often as a result of rheumatic fever, which is rampant in many communities
- Heart Transplants are much more challenging for children as their immune systems are not fully developed
- The only Paediatric transplant unit in Australia is at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne
- In 2007 more than 100 South Australian families travelled to Melbourne for surgery
- More than 4 young Australians will die this week as a result of congenital heart disease. Will you help to save them?

Final Item - eBay Auction Live

It is finally done. Numerous hours have gone into designing the listing and the Sir Donald Bradman A.C. Commemorative Edition personally signed by Sir Don along with Certificate of Authenticity and the bonus copy of the book Dragoncrosse signed by South Australian author Kimberley Thomas with words something to the effect "thanks for supporting heartkids" (it is in safekeeping so it doesn't get damaged so it is not on hand to exactly confirm the notation).

This is Thomas' first book and I believe number two of the trilogy is probably out by now. Who knows, you may pick up a valuable collectors piece as a bonus in this auction .... or it may turn out to be worthless ..... it's all additional to the Sir Don which obviously has significant value and makes it just that little bit more fun.

It feels great to finally get this up after all the work that has gone into trying to generate trades (unsuccessful in most cases as you will have noted from my lack of reaching my $10,000 goal for supporting South Australian families of heartkids going to Melbourne for heart surgery.

You can view the auction here.

Sixty (60) babies in Australia will be diagnosed with heart disease whilst the auction is running .... that is a shocking figure families, extended families, work colleagues, heart adults, general practitioners, cardiologists, surgeons and anyone that doesn't include to rally the Government, large corporations and anyone else with influence to get greater awareness and subsequent funding for not only better treatment and support to families, but for further research to reduce the incidence of this terrible disease. It is certainly time for me to follow up my pre election letter to the then shadow health minister .. now of course health minister Nicola Roxon.

That will be after our little sidestep this coming week where Connor will undergo a cardiac catheter where the catheter is passed through a vein usually in the lower body region or sometimes the neck into the heart. Additionally I believe the cardiologist is also going to attempt to go through the stomach (tricky since Connor has a fundoplication (Nissans)) and behind the lung to have a look at the heart also. What they require is good accurate data for his (our) surgeon in Melbourne to assess what the next course of action is in relation to further open heart surgery. A week later Connor starts school. Heartkids Australia describes these children as "resilient" ... they don't have much choice if they want to make something of their lives.

351 Posts Later, Final Item to be Auctioned on eBay

Some time ago I said that June 30 was the deadline for finishing the Special Zipper uptrade challenge. Yesterday was that day. Unfortunately I have not been able to gain the interest necessary to get to my $10,000 minimum goal but that's life. There's been a fair bit on with Connor coming up for a cardiac catheter next week and Huddy now muscling in on Connor's stomping ground also seeing Connor's ENT as well as pulmanary specialist. Whilst Huddy's outlook remains good, we still have a lot of testing to do and things to rule out.

..but back to the point. I am in the process of designing the eBay listing for the final item to be traded, the Sir Don Bradman AC Commemorative Edition with the added bonus of a signed edition of a novel by a South Australian author (who was involved in what has now become the final trade).

So keep an eye on this page if you want to follow the auction .. I expect to upload it within the next 3-5 days.
